Crews clean 65,000-gallon oil spill near Chicago
ROCKDALE, Ill. (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency says a spill of 65,000 gallons of waste oil outside Chicago has had little effect on the environment.
EPA spokesman Jim Mitchell says crews made progress during the night cleaning up the oil on land in the town of Rockdale and contained areas where the oil contaminated water.
Authorities say a tank ruptured early Sunday at a Caterpillar plant in Rockdale, spilling what officials described as a mixture of hydraulic and cutting oil.
About 6,000 gallons of the oil contaminated a 3-mile section of the Des Plaines River.
The EPA says there is no evidence the oil has harmed fish or bids and there is no danger for people.
Caterpillar says it immediately reported the spill and hired a cleanup contractor.
