Mr. Kristof's editorial is right on the mark, but it could have noted some related, recent news about the state of the Oceans. Global Warmuing cannot, of course, be understood simply by looking at the atmosphere, glacial & ice cap melting, sea level & deforestation. Our discussions in the media (& Gore's presentation) have forgotten the role of the Oceans.
On August 16th the AP released a report based on a
Center for Biological Diversity study entitled "States Petitioned on Ocean Acidification" (link provided below. It states that scientists have now concluded that 1/2 of CO2 emissions are being absorbed by the oceans. This third realm of the biosphere and source of all life is becoming more acidic as a result.
Both carbon and nitrogen form acidic water. Increased oceanianic acidity prevents sea life from maintaining a normal physiological state & among other things prevents the formaton of protective carbonate & silicate shells for microscopic animals and plants--most importantly of plankton such as krill and various phytoplankton comprising the base of Earth's food chain. It will also retard shell formation in larger bottom dwelling and planktonic invertebrates, including coral skeletons.
As a retired paleobiologist I can offer the warning that such ocean acidification (& oft associated 'de-oxygenation')have accompanied several of Earth's past Mass Extinction events. It was such oceanic acidification which followed from the asteroid impact of 65 million years ago-causing the extinction of ~75% of All Earth's known life. It also accompanied the Permo-Triassic extinction which decimated 95% of all known organisms 210 million years ago. The acidification had a Far Greater affect on the biosphere than did the years of darkness & global cooling(then warming) following the impact devastation.
That One Half of CO2 & Nitrogen emissions are being absorbed by Ocean water is Far more critical than increased temperatures and rising sea levels. If the base of the biosphere's food chain is disrupted...well, ..... We are Killing the Oceans! This is Not hyperbole.
We MUST do whatever we can to cut emissions of oil & coal by-products immediately.
It would be very motivating and instructive for Everyone to watch two films that deal with the future and global warming. One made in the 70s, starring Charelton Heston & Edward G. Robinson entitled "Soylent Green" May seem outdated in many ways, yet the story and the secret that Heston tries to reveal to the world is not. The story (set in our present time) also indicates that there was much early research of past and possible future climate change going on during the 70s. It was conducted by a world-wide network of geologists, paleontologists, oceanographers and climatologists that slowly gathered the basic evidence for our present framework of understanding both climate change and extinction. This, Despite what the GW Nay-sayers' claim about 'everyone predicting another ice age'.
[The much-touted and greatly flawed recent film "The Day After Tomorrow" is Pure Nonsense. Yes, it is based extremely loosely on real and excellent science. However, it's presentation and thouroughly permeating hyperbole is as silly as "The Attack of the 50 Foot Woman" of the early 60s (or was if 50s?).]
The other film which people Should see is current and was largely ignored by the public. It's entitled "Children of Men" (Alfonso Charon, starring Clive Owen, Julianna Moore & Michael Caine). This film is set in 2027 and quite realistic in its vision of pollution's toll, mass immigration and civilation's collapse everywhere 'except' what remains of the UK. ....and what remains of Humanity.
Combine "Soylent Green" & "Children of Men" and you get a plausible realistic idea of the future.
