WV Gov. Refuses to Meet with Schoolchildren
Crossposted from Its Getting Hot in Here:
It’s time to turn the heat up on Gov. Manchin. Today the Governor dodged attempts of community members to arrange a meeting to deliver 500 letters from children around the world concerned about the health of the kids of Marsh Fork Elementary School.

Marsh Fork sits 150 feet away from coal factory and is downstream from a seeping sludge dam. These two waste sites are products of mountaintop removal coal mining which has already claimed over 450 mountains in Appalachia. The Governor has refused repeated requests from the community to move their school to a safer location and to stop mountaintop removal altogether. This week during the “Rising to the Challenge” week of action, the letters will get into the hands of the governor… somehow. Stay tuned for more.
If you are in the area, we will be meeting up at 10:30 am February 1st at the Liberty Bell outside the capitol building in Charleston, WV for a rally and press conference. If you are outside the area, call the governor and demand that he receive the letters! For more info, contact Scott Parkin 415-235-0596 or read this fact sheet.

I think that this great that you are getting letters from other concerned school children. How did you go about getting these letters from around the world? Do you have a program for this? This would be something my husband and I would be interested in funding.
Looking forward to your reply, Katherine

[...] posted by Sparki in RAN General on February 2nd, 2007 We mentioned earlier that we’ve been trying to get a meeting with West Virginia’s own Gov. Joe Manchin. He dodged that meeting (busy man that he is) so we decided to make ourselves a little more available. [...]

[...] West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin was given over 400 kids letters in a surprise delivery by activists from Rainforest Action Network and Coal River Mountain Watch at the South Charleston Chamber of Commerce Groundhog Day breakfast. After evading concerned citizens and attempting to shuffle the activists off to lackey’s lackey the day before, the activists tracked Manchin down and delivered the letters after he gave his state of the state of West Virginia economic forecast carrying a banner that said “Dear Gov. Manchin, Please Rebuild Marsh Fork – In Their Community. Love, 400 kids.” More than 400 schoolchildren from Virginia to Australia had written handwritten letters and colored drawings to Manchin sympathizing with the plight of Marsh Fork’s students. [...]

Hi All,
Here are a list of West Virginia talk-radio stations that you can use to discuss the issue. Some stream on the internet but most don’t.
I don’t have schedule info on all the stations, but local people can figure it out.
