Summer kicks off in Grassy Narrows

RAN kicked off a Summer of solidarity with the people of Grassy Narrows last week. Here’s the latest from Alex, one of a group living and working in Grassy for the next two months.

I arrived at Leah’s house just before 7am on May 26th. Leah is an organizer from Forest Ethics. She, David from the Rainforest Action Network and several others from our delegation had packed a 10 passenger van full of gear the night before. We piled in and off we went.Drive up to Grassy May 27 006

I slept most the drive out of southern Ontario. But when I finally awoke, we were in a part of the province that doesn’t fit in to either the city, or the cottage country motif. The northern shores of Lake Superior are as majestic and breathtaking as any I’ve seen on the West Coast of Canada. The heavily forested rolling hills set behind the twisting road along the coast seemed the perfect setting for a thousand road trips or wilderness adventures yet to be experienced. And I suppose this is one of those.

That night we camped by the train tracks outside of Dryden. It was really loud, but an experience for the list none-the-less. Trains rolled by our tents only meters away. The stars are phenomenal out here, and it makes me realize how much light pollution there is in the city. It might be hard going back to the city at the end of the summer.

The next day we stopped in Kenora and bought more than two grocery carts full of food and stuffed it into an already absurdly overcrowded van. Then on to Grassy Narrows.

Thanks Alex! Visit FreeGrassy.org for more info, updates, and ways to get involved.
