What He Meant to Say Was…
The recent back-peddling by the Bush administration over the President’s vows to get America off Middle-Eastern oil does nothing but reaffirm the false promises they use to bait the American people. Perhaps even more duplicitous is the fact that the adminsitration seems to use major political events, like the SOTU address, to put forward misleading and dishonest policy measures that will placate the masses. Basically, the president’s statement’s on oil addiction were…bogus.
Perhaps even more ridiculous is the fact (as pointed out by regular reader Somer in the previous post) that barely 10% of our oil comes from the Persian Gulf (Saudi Arabia isn’t even #1…Canada bears that burden). This means that the President is talking about replacing only 8% of US oil supply with other sources. Suddenly it doesn’t sound like such an incredible statement. It sounds about right for a former oil-man from Texas.
On a related note, Yglesias makes some great points about the different angles around the oil debate.
